Reed Announces 2018 Congressional Art Competition Winner
Congressman Tom Reed announced the winner of the 2018 Congressional High School Art Competition, Sydney Gaul. Ms. Gaul is a senior at Horseheads High School, and crafted the oil painting “The Diplomat’s Daughter”.
“The talent of the young artists we have in our area is very impressive. I am proud to have Sydney’s artwork represent the 23rd district in the Capitol,” said Reed
Sydney and her parents will be invited to travel to Washington, D.C. for a reception on June 27th with all winners of the Congressional Art Competition.
Ms. Gaul’s artwork will be on display in the United States Capitol for one year.
Each year, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage talent. Students submit their entries to their individual Representative’s office, where a panel of local artists then selects the winners. The competition was judged locally by Elmira College art professors.
“Thank you to Jan Kather and Chris Longwell of Elmira College for continuing to judge our competition and making the hard decisions. I extend my congratulations to all of the winners and give my thanks to all of the participants who made this year’s competition a success,” Reed added.
