Reed Addresses Student Debt Crisis with Local Students and ParentsRep. Tom Reed sat down with local college students and parents to talk solutions for the current student debt crisis. "With college costs rising out of control, we care about providing solutions to the next generation of students,” Tom said. “Each graduate deserves a fair chance at financial independence and each school should be held accountable for rising tuition costs. We have to reduce the cost of education for the students of tomorrow to ensure they are not drowning in debt and crippling their futures. “Our reforms require transparency from colleges and encourage tax free scholarship donations to immediately lower the tuition burden on students. These policies will ensure college costs go down in the long term," Tom concluded. “Transferring from Monroe Community College to St. John Fisher I thought would save me money in the long run but even after doing that I will leave Fisher with $60,000 in debt which for most people isn’t manageable," Mike Long of Geneva said. "This will take me a long time to get out of and I appreciate the Congressman’s willingness to help lower costs and eliminate debt.”Tom has been a champion of higher education reforms including the Reducing Excessive Debt and Unfair Costs of Education (REDUCE) Act which encourages universities to lower costs for all eligible students, regardless of their economic background. Tom also introduced "Our Vision for Students" plan that can be viewed here. |
