Reed Sees Cockaigne Resort Success First-Hand
Cockaigne Resort is a success story which shows calamity isn’t always the end of the story.
Rep. Tom Reed visited Cockaigne Resort in Cherry Creek today, viewing the rebuilt lodge and other improvements on the grounds. In 2011, fire broke out at the beloved ski resort, which had been open since the winter of 1966. The lodge, a notable structure impacted by the fire, was built as the Austrian Pavilion for the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City and moved to Cherry Creek in 1966. The structure was destroyed in the fire – but has since been rebuilt in a 12,000 square-foot iteration which is larger than the first.
“Seeing the rebirth of such an important facet of the community of Silver Creek and the Chautauqua County area is heartening,” said Tom. “The fire at Cockaigne was a devastating event, but it is good to see it end on a positive note with the reinvigoration of Cockaigne. We care about the success of this area, and are glad to see it first-hand.”
The new and improved Cockaigne resort also includes a tubing hill, a terrain park and slope-style hill with trails in between hills and renovations to other ski facilities on the grounds. While the resort was once known for winter-only activities, the grounds will now be open all year round in different capacities. Recently, the facility held the “Brewgrass Festival” on the grounds, providing camping opportunities, live music and more to visitors. Other events such as concerts, family activities and more are in the works.
“Growing up in Fredonia, Cockaigne was a staple in our wintertime activities,” said Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello. “I am excited to see it re-open as a greatly expanded year-round entertainment and recreational destination. Cockaigne is part of the growth we are experiencing in Chautauqua County.”A number of positions will be created by the redevelopment, including 50 full-time employees in the winter. Other positions during the warmer months will depend on events and other factors. For more information, visit www.cockaigne.com.
