Dear Neighbor,
As the Republican Leader of the Social Security Subcommittee on the Ways and Means Committee, I recently found a way to help address a large problem facing our constituents and thousands of people across the country – identity theft.
I was proud to work with my partner, Rep. John Larson, to introduce a bill which would require the Social Security Administration to provide identity theft victims with a single point of contact within the Social Security Administration when the misuse of their Social Security number results in the need to resolve any issue.
We did this because it’s not fair to compound the stress of identity theft with bureaucracy.
We care about ensuring that victims don’t have to deal with a different person during every call to the Social Security Administration, or have to explain their situation repeatedly while worrying if the SSA employee they are working with is a fraudster.
This bipartisan bill is a common-sense way to help those suffering from identity theft and has been endorsed by the AARP, the Association of Mature American Citizens, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, the National Council of Social Security Management Associations and Social Security Works. Let’s get this done to lighten the burden for those dealing with this issue.
Until next time,
Tom
