A Message of Optimism

Dear Neighbor,

Earlier this week, we heard an optimistic and forward-looking message about the future of American during the President’s State of the Union Address.

Our strong economy after tax reform is lifting up all Americans – we have the lowest minority unemployment rate on record; opportunity zones are boosting disenfranchised people out of poverty and new trade deals are creating jobs and opportunity. Nearly 7 million people are off food stamps since 2016. These successes will help to carry us through the work that needs to be done in the next year and beyond.

The President has called on Congress to work on paid family leave, which is something the Problem Solvers have been working on. We are also going to focus on the cost of prescription drugs and surprise medical billing. These are common sense goals that we can all work together on.

It is time to get rid of all the political theater and reach across the aisle to get important changes made for the American people. During the speech, I was proud to sit with the Problems Solvers Caucus in the middle of a time of deep division. It is refreshing to be a part of a group that is not afraid to show there are still people willing to work together for the good of the American people.

Until next time,

Tom
