GENEVA, NY – Today, Rep. Tom Reed was proud to present Kyla James, the winner of the 2020 Congressional Art Competition, with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for her contribution to the competition. Kyla won the competition with her colored pencil entry, “Bjork.”

“Meeting Kyla, the artist of this amazing piece, was a joy and we were thrilled to recognize her hard work today,” said Tom. “It’s clear Kyla is dedicated to her craft and we appreciate her efforts in this districtwide competition. We are all inspired by her skill and can’t wait to see what other successes life brings her.”

Kyla is a ninth-grader at Romulus High School who enjoys music, swimming, baking and going to the beach. She is also an honor roll student. Her artwork will be on display in the United States Capitol for one year in the Cannon Tunnel.

Each year, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage talent. Students submit their entries to their individual representative’s office, where a panel of local artists then select the overall winner. This competition was judged locally by Elmira collage art professors Jan Kather, Aaron Kather, and Chris Longwall.
