Corning Post Office Building Dedication Ceremony for Specialist Ryan p. Jayne
Today the U.S. postal facility located at 198 Baker Street in Corning was formally dedicated the “Specialist Ryan P. Jayne Post Office.” While serving his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, Specialist Jayne was tragically killed by an IED alongside two fellow New York soldiers on November 3rd, 2012.
“For Specialist Jayne’s family, friends and everyone who knew him, naming the Corning Post Office in his honor is one small way we can recognize his bravery and sacrifice in protection of all of us,” Rep. Tom Reed said at the ceremony. “It is only right we honor Specialist Jayne in a way that preserves his legacy as one of our country’s heroes and help ensure we never forget his great sacrifice for us all.”
“Army Specialist Ryan Jayne served with truly heroic bravery,” said Senator Gillibrand, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “He answered the highest call, and made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. Naming the Corning Post Office after him will honor his legacy in the community he loved for all to proudly remember his life and his service.”
Rep. Reed and Sen. Gillibrand worked with the Jayne family to pass an act of Congress to re-name the facility.
“On Sept. 25, Jayne will be immortalized in the community where he attended high school. “The United States Postal Service is privileged to have the name and spirit of Specialist Jayne forever associated with the Corning Post Office,” said U.S. Postal Service Western NY District Manager James Lentz.
