Rep. Tom Reed is urging taxpayers to take advantage of a free program to prepare and file federal tax returns online this tax season. The Free File program is open to all constituents with a 2013 Adjusted Gross Income of $58,000 or less. Qualified individuals can visit to prepare and e-file their federal tax returns at no cost.

“With a tax code of more than 70,000 pages, any assistance at tax time to help navigate the code is welcome,” Reed said. “I encourage constituents to visit the website and take advantage of the step-by-step free preparation and filing help. Free File saves time and empowers taxpayers to file their own returns. Importantly, the program keeps money in the pockets of hardworking families and doesn’t cost taxpayer dollars to facilitate.”

Free File is a partnership between the IRS and Free File Alliance, a partnership that offers free tax-filing software and online customer support through the website where visitors can direct specific questions about their individual tax returns to the tax software company of their choice.

“Our work in Washington continues toward a simpler, fairer tax code aimed at leveling the playing field and keeping money in the pockets of taxpayers,” Reed continued. “With tax returns due in just two short months, Free File cares for the needs of taxpayers who need it most by simplifying the filing process with free assistance.”

Taxpayers making $58,000 or less – nearly 100 million taxpayers nationwide – can prepare and file their taxes online for free at More than 40 million returns have been filed through the Free File program since it began in 2003.
