Reed Working to Position Southern Tier-Finger Lakes Region for Manufacturing Hub
Rep. Tom Reed met Monday with local manufacturers for a manufacturing advisory board roundtable and to formally present his Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act of 2013 (RAMI). The group met at Scott Rotary Seals in Olean to brainstorm how to position the region best for its very own manufacturing hub, the kind of innovation center created under RAMI. In addition, Reed gave an overview of federal legislation impacting manufacturers and updates on both the House Manufacturing Caucus and tax reform. Following the discussion, Reed toured the Olean facility with employees.
“As we like to do with these roundtable discussions, we had an open conversation on what is being felt on the ground and how Congress can help bring manufacturing back to America,” Reed said. “What I’m particularly interested in is positioning the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes region for our own manufacturing hub to champion the technology we’re developing right here at home. The RAMI Act opens up that possibility for local manufacturers, businesses and academia to have a real, tangible stake in the game.”
Manufacturers, community college representatives, county chambers and workforce development personnel all joined the conversation Monday as Reed answered questions on RAMI and talked with the group about the importance of investing in manufacturing to boost America’s competiveness. Reed’s bill would build public-private partnerships across the country centered around cutting-edge technologies. Reed wants that investment to happen in New York’s 23rd district.
“For every dollar spent in manufacturing, $1.32 is added to the economy – the highest multiplier effect of any economic sector,” Reed continued. “Investments in manufacturing have a clear, proven track record of economic return on investment. Now is the time for us to invest in manufacturing. That’s where my RAMI bill comes in by creating an environment where the private sector invests in the strengths of our nation to grow American manufacturing.”
Over the weekend Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid pointed to Reed’s RAMI bill as a bipartisan initiative he is considering bringing up for a vote in the Senate. The bill was also promoted by the President recently in his State of the Union address as a vehicle for job creation and manufacturing growth.
