TOM REED PRESENTS 2014 SCRIPPS NATIONAL SPELLING BEE WINNER SRIRAM HATHWAR WITH OFFICIAL STATEMENT FOR THE RECORD

Tom Reed presented Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion Sriram Hathwar of Corning with an official Statement for the Record in the House of Representatives. Reed visited Sriram Monday at the Alternative School for Math and Science in Corning where Sriram is an eighth-grader. This was Sriram’s fifth attempt at the championship and final year of eligibility. Sriram outlasted 279 other contestants and was declared co-champion after correctly spelling “stichomythia.”

“It’s incredible what this bright young man has accomplished already in his young life,” Reed said. “We’ve been keeping a close eye on Sriram throughout his years at the National Spelling Bee and could not be more excited for Sriram, his family, teachers and friends who supported him all the way to the championship. He mastered the dictionary and displayed an impressive level of composure and confidence as millions of viewers around the world watched him take on some of the most challenging words in the English language. We are all extremely proud of Sriram and all that he will surely accomplish in the years to come.”
